Johnson, Mathias Named to U.S. U19 Team

SPARKS, Md. — US Lacrosse has announced that Dylan Johnson and Simon Mathias have been named to the 2016 U.S. Men’s National Under-19 team as injury replacements for Drew Supinski and Thomas Wright.

Johnson recently completed his freshman year at the University of Denver where he started all 16 games on defense. The 6-foot-2 defenseman scored two goals, had 23 ground balls and was tied for second on the team with six caused turnovers. A native of Englewood, Colo., Johnson was a four-year all-state player at Cherry Creek High School and earned US Lacrosse All-America honors.

Mathias was the leading goal scorer for the University of Pennsylvania this spring and was named the Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Year while earning honorable mention All-Ivy League honors. Mathias started all 15 games and had 28 goals and 11 assists to rank second overall on Penn with 39 points. A graduate of Ridgefield (Conn.) High School, Mathias was named the state player of the year as a senior by USA Today.

Supinski, one of Team USA’s leading scorers through its exhibition season, started the first eight games for Johns Hopkins and had eight goals and four assists before suffering a season-ending injury. Wright played in six games for Penn State this year before being sidelined with an injury.

The 2016 Federation of International Lacrosse Men’s U19 World Championship will be held from July 7-16 in Coquitlam, British Columbia. The U.S. team, led by Ohio State head coach Nick Myers, will have a closed training camp this weekend at the new US Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks. Md., and will then convene again in Seattle for a training camp in early July before crossing the border to Canada for the world championship.

The U.S. Men’s U19 team has amassed a 41-2 all-time record in international play, claiming gold in each of the seven U19 world championship events to date (1988, 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2008, 2012). Team USA defeated Canada 10-8 in the gold medal game to capture the 2012 FIL World Championship in Turku, Finland.
