GUILDFORD, England — The U.S. women’s team closed out a week of training and exhibitions in England on Sunday by posting a 19-1 victory over Germany and a 20-1 win over Wales. The U.S. finished the tour with a 5-0 record.

In preparation for the 2017 FIL World Cup, to be held here at Surrey Sports Park, Team USA embarked on a week-long training trip to get a taste of what the team might experience next summer, and allow the coaching staff to evaluate how this group of athletes handle being taken out of their element. They ended with wins over the English developmental team, Scotland, England, Germany and Wales.

“We didn’t let the outside distractions impact how we went about what we wanted to do,” said U.S. team head coach Ricky Fried. “The consistent level of play that we had over this week was the best I’ve seen from a U.S. team since I’ve been a part of it.”

In Sunday’s first game, Danielle Estrasco (4 goals) and Brooke Griffin (3g, 3a) led the U.S. to a dominating win over Germany in which the U.S. record assists on 15 of its 19 goals. In the second game, Kayla Treanor (4g, 2a) led the U.S. offense while Laura Zimmerman and Michelle Tumolo each added hat tricks.

The team will return stateside on July 4, a day that will hopefully afford everyone a little rest and relaxation after the trip. That won’t last long, though, as the stakes will be ratcheted right back up when these 24 players, along with 81 others, converge for the 2017 U.S. Women’s National Team tryouts August 5-7 at the US Lacrosse national training center in Sparks, Md.

“We’ve all been through tryouts and it’s not easy,” said U.S. attacker Michelle Tumolo. “This is a really good stepping stone going into tryouts, knowing you can play on the level that has been established for Team USA.”
